Wakefield had been selected as the 2015 School of the Year by the Embassy of Spain. This award is selected by the Spanish Ministry of Education and the Spanish Embassy in the US to recognize exceptional Spanish language programs among the schools in the US and Canada that are part of the International Spanish Academy (ISA) network. Wakefield is the only Spanish Immersion High School in Arlington Public Schools and in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and for many years has been the culminating venue for students who started in the immersion program at Key or Claremont and continued in Gunston Middle School to finish at Wakefield with rigorous advanced level Spanish classes, including Immersion Biology, AP Spanish Language and Culture and AP Literature. Gunston Middle School won second place, making this the first year two of the four immersion schools in APS are picked for their excellence. We are proud of our students, who have invested years in the program and reap the benefits of graduating bilingual and biliterate; congratulations are also in order to our amazing Spanish teachers Magaly Reder, Aymee Buzzi, Natasha Lopez, Katie Beverage, and Rosa Navas, for their hard work with their students and for always mantaining high standards in the Spanish curriculum. Wakefield was recognized at a ceremony at the Spanish Ambassador’s Residence at the end of May. ¡Felicidades!
