At last night’s meeting, the School Board voted to approve the final design of the addition/renovation of Abingdon Elementary School. The project will add 12 classrooms and 136 seats to the school and will include improvements to the existing gymnasium, kitchen, and media space, as well as enhancements for pedestrian and vehicle access to the school. Staff presented the Superintendent’s Proposed 2016-17 School Year Calendars to the School Board. Key dates in next year's proposed calendar include:

- Mon, Oct. 10: Columbus Day Holiday (for Students and Staff)
- Fri, Nov. 11: Veterans Day Holiday for Students; Professional Learning Day for Staff
- Wed, Nov. 23 – Fri, Nov. 25: Thanksgiving Holiday
- Wed, Dec. 21 – Mon, Jan. 2: Winter Break
- Mon, Apr. 10 – Fri, Apr. 14: Spring Break
- Wed, Jun. 21: Last day for high school
- Thu, Jun. 22: High School Graduation; Last day for middle school
- Fri, Jun. 23: Last day for elementary school
The proposed APS calendar as well as proposed calendars for Barcroft Elementary, the Stratford Program, the H-B Woodlawn Program and the 2017 Summer School Program are available online
. The Board is expected to adopt the 2016-17 school year calendar at the March 17 meeting.
The School Board also considered proposed changes to School Board Policy 40-1.19 regarding the use of school facilities. The proposed changes would give priority to organizations that support APS, require criminal background checks for vendor use that provide enrichment activities to APS students when APS staff are not present, and update requirements for use by PTAs.Monitoring Items
Compensation Study Report:
Staff provided a preliminary report on the market salary survey currently underway to evaluate and benchmark the competitiveness of APS salaries and benefits. The information included high-level findings, preliminary recommendations and next steps. The complete report will be available later this spring, at which time staff will discuss various recommendations and options for employee groups in preparation for implementation during the FY18 budget year.Library Services Update:
Staff provided a report on Library Services, highlighting the progress to nurture students’ interest in reading through book clubs, guest author visits, summer reading opportunities, technology integration, and expansion of e-book availability. Library Services is fostering leadership development among staff and enhancing professional development, networking, and recognition opportunities for APS librarians.Action Items
In addition to the approval of the Abingdon Elementary School Final Design, the Board also approved revisions to School Board Policy 35-6.2 regarding staff retirement changes and several minor changes to school board committee appointments, reflected in School Board Policy 10-6. The Board began the meeting by recognizing the dedicated work of APS employees who have achieved career milestones of 20, 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service with the school division. This year APS recognized 141 employees who have provided a combined total of 2,560 years of service to APS.
