 School Board Appoints Dr. Kristi Murphy Assistant Superintendent of HR
Dr. Kristi Murphy The School Board appointed Dr. Kristi Murphy as the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for Arlington Public Schools. Murphy has been serving as interim assistant superintendent for APS since Sept. 30, 2015.

“Dr. (Kristi) Murphy is knowledgeable about human resource practices and is focusing on initiatives related to the Strategic Plan including work force growth, professional development and attracting and retaining a corps of diverse and highly-qualified school leaders and staff,” said Superintendent Dr. Pat Murphy. He continued, “I know that she will continue to provide continuity and leadership for the Human Resources Department as we continue to grow as a school division.”

Murphy holds a Bachelor of Science in psychology from Howard University, and earned a Master of Arts in special education and human development and a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in administration and policy studies from the George Washington University.

Murphy previously served as Arlington’s Director of Special Education. She has 16 years of service with APS as a Special Education Director, Coordinator and teacher. Murphy has provided strategic oversight, leadership and guidance to all APS schools and programs about special education support and services for approximately 3,500 students who are identified with disabilities.

As Director of Special Education she closely worked with the Department of Human Resources to ensure the selection of an inclusive and diverse staff, addressing staff and compliance issues, increasing staff certification and licensure to address state requirements for graduation purposes, and addressing employment concerns that arose periodically.
