School Board Approves Charge to Whole Child Working Group
Appoints Chair to New Working Group

The Arlington School Board approved the charge for the new Whole Child Working Group (WCWG) at last night’s meeting. Heather Sauve was also appointed as Chair of the new Whole Child Working Group.

The WCWG will help APS ensure that each child is healthy, safe, supported, academically engaged, and challenged by developing a framework that will inform decision‐making related to meeting the needs of the whole child. The Group’s work will serve as the foundation for the development of future School Board priorities and the next APS Strategic Plan. The Working Group’s full charge is available online.

The Board also approved the Final Fiscal Closeout/Status Report and CIP Quarterly Update. A total of $26.4 million in closeout funds will fund current year requirements for textbooks, equipment, and safety and security projects as well as set-aside funds in Capital, Compensation and Future Budget Reserves. In addition, the Board included $2.5 million of the FY15 Closeout funds for a Student Success Initiative in response to the School Board’s request for initiatives that support students. More information can be found online.

Monitoring Item
Advisory Committee on Instruction (ACI) Report – ACI members reported on the status of the Career, Technical, and Adult Education Advisory Committee. The presentation highlighted current committee activities; successes for each program area; and an update on previous recommendations. More information can be found online.

At the start of the meeting, the School Board recognized the winners of the 2016 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Literary and Visual Arts Contest. Chris Ditta, president of the Arlington County Council of PTAs, also commended the Board members for their work on behalf of students and presented them certificates in recognition of School Board Appreciation Month.
