 Swanson Summer Reading & Information

Important Information for Rising 6th Grade Students

Around July 6th - 8th, all student grade levels will promote by one year.  Therefore, students who were in 5th grade during the 2015-2016 school year will become 6th graders in all APS systems, including library systems.  What does this mean?  When this change takes place, rising 6th graders will no longer be able to log into their elementary school's ACORN, Brytewave, or MackinVIA accounts.  However, they will be able to log into these accounts through Swanson Library.  We encourage rising 6th graders with a device and internet access to log in and begin checking out eBooks from Swanson this summer!  Visit our ACORN and eBooks page for information about our two eBook platforms, Brytewave and MackinVIA.  All 6th graders will receive an orientation to these platforms in the fall at Swanson.

Important Information for Rising 9th Grade Students

Around July 6th - 8th, all student grade levels will promote by one year.  Therefore, students who were in 8th grade during the 2015-2016 school year will become 9th graders in all APS systems, including library systems.  What does this mean?  When this change takes place, rising 9th graders will no longer be able to log into their Swanson ACORN, Brytewave, or MackinVIA accounts.  However, they will be able to log into these accounts through their new high school.  This will allow rising 9th graders access to a wide variety of new eBooks.  We wish our graduating 8th graders well, and encourage them to explore what their high schools have to offer.  Students can visit their high school library web pages for more information:

Summer Reading

There is no mandated summer reading list for Swanson students.  We encourage students to read for pleasure, and invite students to take part in the following opportunities:

1. We encourage everybody to sign up for the Arlington Public Library Summer Reading Program ("Read for the Win").  This year, students can sign up online or in person at any public library.  Students under 13 years old must sign up with a parent or guardian.

2. Swanson Library is inviting returning students to check out up to 10 physical library books to read over the summer.  Students who wish to take advantage of this opportunity can pick up a permission form in the library or print one out here.  Books for the summer may be checked out the week of June 20th to 23rd, and kept until September 6th.

3. We encourage students to take on the "Reading Without Walls" challenge:
 Reading Without Walls Challenge

Next Year

We have some exciting things planned for the 2016-2017 school year!  We will be running a school-wide 40 Book Challenge.  Practice for next year's challenge by reading for fun this summer!

On September 23rd, we will have an author visit from Gene Leun Yang (American Born Chinese, Secret Coders, Boxers & Saints).  Check this space later in the summer for information on how you can get a signed book.
