Digital Badges

Abingdon Elementary School in Arlington, VA (APS) is trying something new!  We are using a digital badging system this year to track our Technology PD (Professional Development).

This will allow teachers more flexibility in:

  1. What PD they choose (like a “Choose Your Own Adventure”)
  2. When and where they do this PD
  3. How they choose to implement this PD into the classroom.

There will be many different technology topics to study, and different styles of professional development, each with their own Badge to gain!  Check out all of the different badges on the “Digital Badges” pages (links at the top of the screen).

FLIPPED PD:

Teachers will choose a topic that they want to learn more about.  Each topic will be broken down into the multiple sections and give you a chance to reflect on what you learned to earn a badge!

Topic Sections:

  • What is this?
  • Ways to Use This for Teaching and Learning
  • Video Tutorials
  • PDF Instruction Sheets
  • Classroom Examples
  • Other Resources
  • How to Earn Your Badge

Teachers will choose how much time to spend learning about each topic (based on their individual level), and then implement and document their use in the classroom.  Once they have posted their proof of use and a short reflection on the “Check Us Out!” Blog Page, they will receive a Flipped Digital Badge.

FACE TO FACE PD:

Teachers will have multiple opportunities this year to attend fun and teacher run PD.  Each Tech Tuesday (3:00-3:30) will use one or more PD style.  Attending Tech Tuesdays will give you a chance to learn from your colleagues and reflect on what you learned in order to earn a badge!

Various PD Styles We Will Use:

  • Camp Fires
  • Speed Dating
  • Ignite Sessions
  • “Appy Hour”
  • SAMR Slams
  • Discovery Lab
  • Prep/Debrief about Classroom Visits

Teachers will attend these fun face-to-face Tech Tuesday events (30 mins) and then reflect, implement and document their use in the classroom.  Once they have posted a short reflection of what they learned and how they hope to implement this strategy on the “Check Us Out!” Blog Page, they will receive a F2F Digital Badge.

LEADERS of PD:

Teachers will have multiple opportunities this year to share their success (and challenges) with their colleagues!  This year is all about celebrating each other, learning from your neighbor, and collaborating with one another!   Each Tech Tuesday (3:00-3:30) will use one or more PD style.  Participating as a Leader in a Tech Tuesdays will give you a chance to share what you are doing and what you have learned with your colleagues and reflect on what you shared in order to earn a badge!

Various PD Styles You Can Be A Leader Of:

  • Speed Dating
  • Ignite Sessions
  • Discovery Lab
  • Classroom Visits

Teachers that help lead (or present/share) at these fun face-to-face Tech Tuesday events (30 mins) and then post what they presented with a short reflection on the “Check Us Out!” Blog Page,  will receive a Leader Digital Badge.

Digital Badges = Technology PD Credit

More to come on this.  We have developed a point system for each badge based on the hours an average teacher might spend to master and earn each particular badge.  This point system will then be used to give you PD Credits (hopefully in ERO – we are working on that)!

In order to start collecting your badges, you will need to set up your Credly Account and join our WordPress Blog.  You will learn how to do this by earning your first badge – the “Credly Badge“, and your second badge – the “WordPress Badge“.  After these first two badges, you can go in any order that you want!  Have fun searching for badges that will inspire you!
