Frequently Asked Questions

How do students take this class?
Students have the opportunity to take Technology Education in all three years at the middle school.  Students wishing to take the class in Sixth grade have two options:
1.     Students experience 4.5 weeks of the class in the Exploration wheel.  This is the standard elective experience for all sixth graders that do not sign up for a specialized music or performance elective.  Students get an overview of the scope of technology as a subject and complete some basic projects.
2.    Students interested in a more math and science focused unit can sign up for the STEAM class, an all-year math and science cohort elective.  This class was piloted in 2014 for sixth grade to increase the math and science scores on the SOLs as well as show an integrated approach to art in the design process of STEM.

In the 7th and 8th grade, students can sign up for classes for 18 weeks (one semester) as
Technology Education 7: Inventions and Innovations
Or
Technology Education 8: Technological Systems

Both 7th and 8th grade students are welcome to sign up for the after school ACT II class offered in the fall semester for Technology Education.  This class is a hybrid between the 7th and 8th grade curriculums and focuses on a more “open lab time” experience.

What technologies do students use in the classroom?

Students will use 2D and 3D modeling programs, 3D printers, Laser cutters and traditional wood shop tools.  All of these elements represent materials processing and the ability to create using your mind and hands.  Students are instructed in safe use of each piece of equipment and use them appropriately for their needs.  Students must wear safety glasses in the wood shop and know where the power switches are to stop machines at all times .

Students use a variety of programs for digital design as well as introductions to different engineering fields.

Are there summer opportunities?

Please check the Arlington Career Center summer class schedule for further information.  These classes change each year but there are always offerings for students in the middle school.
