S.T.E.A.M. Instruction at Tuckahoe Elementary School

Since 1996, Tuckahoe students have experienced innovative outdoor learning through the Discovery Schoolyard Program. Students in all grades utilize the entire outdoor learning space, but also have garden areas designated for them. Learning in this setting lends itself to the incorporation of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.), and students in grades K through 5 will regularly engage in S.T.E.A.M. lessons. Depending on the grade level, examples of this learning could include:

  • Investigating how people use technology and engineering to solve the challenges posed by seasonal changes - and the science behind the way other living things adapt to these changes.
  • Exploring the use of art as a powerful communication tool.
  • Discovering how important math is for planning and decision-making.

S.T.E.A.M. instruction is further enhanced by the use of instructional computer-based technology to build functional literacy. It is academically-aligned, developmentally appropriate, and builds real-world connections.
