Websites and Databases for Students

Looking for a book in the Jamestown Library?
Search the ACORN online catalog.  You may search by title, author or subject.

Websites and Databases
These sites provide students with reliable and valid information on the types of topics they need most.
If you're at school:  you have direct access to the Online Databases.
If you're at home:  for some of the databases, a user name and password are required.
You can obtain login information for most online reference databases on Blackboard (under the Library Online tab).  For access to the others, please contact Ms. Blaine.
A Library of Congress website!  Use this site to find great biographies on famous Americans.  No username or password required.
TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of animated, talking picture books, both fiction and nonfiction. TumbleBooks are created by adding animation, sound, music and narration to existing picture books in order to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you. Go to Ebooks under the Selected Resources heading.
CultureGrams is one of Ms. B.'s favorite online reference databases. Looking for the flag of Peru? Want to know the state bird of Nevada? Interested in videos of Chinese instruments being played or photographs of France? CultureGrams is the place! [Password required from home - see Blackboard]

This resource can only be accessed by students during the school day and only with an username and password.  Some of the BrainPop videos are free and can be accessed any time, any where! [Password required from home - see Blackboard]

Encyclopedia Britannica Online
Encyclopedia Britannica Elementary Edition, an online reference database, also includes a Merriam Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus, a World Atlas, and Timelines. [Password required from home - see Blackboard]

Thanks to the generosity of the Jamestown PTA, this site pairs fiction with nonfiction texts. Great for watching WestonWoods videos and for hearing books read aloud. [Password required from school and home - Contact Ms. B.]

World Book Student Edition
From Tutankhamun to Virginia history, this online reference database version of the World Book encyclopedia will help with almost any research project. Includes brief biographies of explorers, inventors and authors alongside topical areas such as social studies and science. [Password required from home - see Blackboard]
PebbleGo provides tons of information on animals, their habitats, space and planets, biographies and social studies topics. Best resource for our emergent readers! [Password required from home and school - See Blackboard]
