Congratulations!

To Emily Flickinger for winning the VA State Tennis Titles - Emily Flickinger, playing for Yorktown High School,  won the 2010 Virginia High School League AAA singles and doubles titles.  Emily also was named to the Washington Post All-Met girls tennis team.  Emily was undefeated in the regular season for the third consecutive year and won the District singles and doubles titles for the third consecutive year.  She was undefeated in post season play in 2010.

DeBor who has been selected to play violin at the National Society of Arts and Letters award ceremony. The ceremony will occur at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater in April 27, 2009 at 7:30 pm.  Montana was the recipient of last year's "Excellence in the Arts" award from H-B Woodlawn.

WOW!! GREAT JOB CLASS OF 2008!!!


FILM: - On May 28th Amilcar, a Bolivian HILT student in Anne Welles' Independent Film class, Amilcar won First Place in the Experimental Film category, AND Best in Show at the Arlington Youth Film Festival!! He was competing against lots of other films (thirty to fifty) made by High School students from all the Arlington schools, including the Arlington Career Center! He was definitely the star of the entire show and beaming from ear to ear. He worked very hard on this piece and really deserved the recognition. His two-minute STOP movie movie will be playing on the website very soon - it has several other students in it. Amilcar was also interviewed for the Sun Gazette soon after the win and there will be a piece in there about him soon.

Cappies Gala Awards - Congratulations to the cast and crew of "As Bees in Honey Drown" for winnning Best Play at the Cappies Gala Award Show Sunday, June 8 at the Kennedy Center. The cast includes Montana DeBor, Miranda Webster, Graham Hooper, Tyson Price, Caroline Brent,and Jack Crawford-Brown. The play received three other awards - Best Comic Actress (Miranda Webster), Best Featured Actor (Graham Hooper), and Creativity (Sabrina Zeile). Congratulations!

National Society of Arts and Letters awards the Excellence in the Arts Award to Montana DeBor - The National Society of Arts and Letters in conjunction with the Kennedy Center awards the Excellence in the Arts Award to Montana DeBor on MAY 28, 2008 AT 1:00PM at the Kennedy Center. Montana DeBor is a junior at H-B. Woodlawn.

Financial Literacy Test - from the US Treasury - Congratulations to James P Andors, Michael Gibbs, Amelia Gordon, Joseph Huennekens, Rubi L. Novillo, Victor A Oliveira, Teresa A Rustin, Alexandra Staeben who placed in the top 25th percentile and will receive a certificate of recognition and James P Andors and Michael Gibbs who scored in the top one percentile of all scores and qualify for the National Financial Literacy Award.  More info can be found here at http://flc.treas.gov/memo.htm

Emily Flickinger Wins High School District Tennis Tounament - Emily Flickinger won the Virginia High School League National District tennis tournament on May 8th defeating Washington Lee's no. 1 player 6-0,6-1. Emily was undefeated in the regular season, playing for Yorktown High School. She received honorable mention for the Washington Post All Met team for high school girls tennis, and was on the first team for the Virginia All Met team.

Forecast Earth Summit - Monica "MQ" Bernstein, Class of 2011, was one of 22 high school students from around the nation chosen to attend a December 7th-9th environmental summit with scientists, writers and activists. In the competition, she wrote an essay, underwent a 25-minute interview, and submitted a research presentation she'd completed on pandas, deforestation & biodiversity. H-B families & alumni will see the PSA she wrote and filmed on reducing carbon dioxide emissions appearing on The Weather Channel in 2008.

HB Woodlawn Girls Robotics Team Wins Award at NoVA FLL Competition
- Congratulations to H-B Woodlawn's Girls Lego Robotics team, "The Psychedelic Nano Flamingoes" for taking home the second place award for their project presentation at the recent Northern Virginia First Lego League regional competition in Ashburn, VA. The H-B team won for their project examining Conservation & Alternative Energy Solutions for 7-11 Eleven Convenience Stores. Kudos go to team members Katie Linek, Ruthie Broderick, Charlotte Raskovitch, Kaley Shuey, Ibby Han, and Morgan Scott for their hard work and creative approach to robotics and energy issues surrounding global warming. Teresa Germann was the team coach and Kathy Molina, sixth grade Science teacher at Woodlawn, sponsors the team. Principal Frank Haltiwanger and assistant principal Judy Mcknight deserve special thanks for taking time out of their busy schedules to let the Flamingoes into the building after hours on holidays and weekends to train.



H-B Cappies Reviewers!
- T.D. Crowley wrote the cappies review of St Stephen's & St Agnes' performance of "Metamorphoses" which was selected to be sent to the Washington Post - Alexandria/Arlington Extra. Alexandra Staeben's review of the same show was selected to be forwarded to ShowBizRadio.net. Congratulations Alexandra and T.D.!


Ben Huff, HB Senior and team captain for the Wakefield HS golf team received an 8th place Medal in the Virginia AAA National District Tourmament. He will advance to the Virginia AAA Northern Region Tournament this week.
